About Ham Radio in Minnesota

What is Amateur (Ham) Radio?

From the National ARRL website: "Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need." See here for more info on the National ARRL Website.

Organized Clubs and Repeaters

We have many active local clubs with regular meetings, and events. Several clubs operate VHF/UHF repeater systems which are often busy with rag chews (friendly chit-chat) especially during the club nets, or commute drive times. See the Clubs page for a listing of local clubs. See the Repeaters page for a listing of local repeaters.

Public service and emergency communications

Minnesota operators have long participated in emergency communications programs such as ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service), RACES, and Skywarn, working with the National Weather Service and local emergency management. For more information on Skywarn and ARES see the links on the Resources page.
